A summary of the key takeaways from
The Northville Township Board recently approved plans from Redico to develop “The Village at Northville” at the site of the former women’s correctional facility at 5 Mile Road and Beck Road. The vote was 4-3. The plans include a Meijer, movie theater, hotel, 78 townhomes, a multi-tenant building, retail shops, a gas station, and a bank.
Northville Township would sell the property to Redico and is anticipated to receive roughly $5 Million of the proceeds, which would be used to tear down buildings at the former psychiatric facility on 7 Mile Road in Northville.
The Village at Northville would hopefully encourage corporations and other businesses to take residence at the MiTech Development on the opposite side of Beck Road.
The current property has environmental contamination issues which Northville does not currently have the funds to remedy. The development would help take care of the contamination as well as tear down the former psychiatric facility, which those in favor of the development saw as a win-win.
Many residents showed up to oppose the plans and voiced dissatisfaction for a number of reasons, but ultimately the board agreed it would benefit the community.
The Board’s approval is contingent upon a few extra conditions, including limiting the operational hours of the Meijer, “upscale” architectural requirements for the Meijer façade, requirement of 20% open space, excess parking to be turned into landscaping, and more.
